How long will my assets last in retirement?

The calculator attempts to project how long your current assets will last into the future, based on your estimates of future asset returns and living expenses from the time of retirement.
  • Incorporates both inflation and taxation.
  • If you have investment properties, you can elect to sell them at retirement to realise the cash or hold the investment properties. If your assets diminish to zero because expenses have exceded non-property investment returns, an investment property will automatically be sold by the model at the projected value and the proceeds distributed to your non-property investment asset base.
  • All variables involved in the calculation can vary considerably over time, including, but not limited to, life expectancy, inflation rates, interest rates, asset class return rates, tax rates, superannuation tax rates, and government policy. The outcomes do not constitute financial advice and should be used as a guide only.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes this retirement calculator different from others?

Most free retirement calculators only handle simple savings and a flat return rate. This one also models property — including selling an investment property or downsizing your home — alongside tax, inflation, superannuation/pension rules, and country-specific life expectancy, then projects your position year by year rather than giving you a single number.

Can I include property in my retirement plan?

Yes. You can enter your home and up to ten investment properties, including valuations, loans, rental income, and expenses. If your projected investible assets run out, the calculator will automatically model selling an eligible investment property to help cover the shortfall, and will flag if you may need to consider downsizing, renting, or a reverse mortgage on your home.

Does the calculator account for tax?

Yes. It applies a progressive marginal tax rate table, a separate superannuation/pension tax rate, and an optional tax surcharge — all of which can vary by country. A full breakdown of how your estimated tax was calculated is available in the Tax Calculation Detail section.

Does this work for countries other than Australia?

The calculator lets you select a country, which sets default life expectancy, tax rates, and inflation for that country. It was originally built around Australian superannuation and tax rules, so those are the most complete right now, with more countries being added over time.

What happens if I run out of money before life expectancy?

The calculator will tell you directly — including the age it expects your money to run out, and how that compares to your life expectancy. If it's before your life expectancy, it will suggest options such as reducing expenses, downsizing your home, or a reverse mortgage. These are general suggestions only, not personal financial advice.

Is my data saved or sent anywhere?

No. Everything you enter stays in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server. You can save your inputs to a file on your own device at any time using the Save Inputs button, and load them back in later with Load Inputs.

Is this financial advice?

No. This calculator produces estimates only, based on the figures and assumptions you provide. It isn't a substitute for advice from a licensed financial adviser, accountant, or other qualified professional who can consider your full personal circumstances. See the full disclaimer below for details.

Is the calculator free to use?

Yes, completely free, with no account or sign-up required.
