What determines a bond's price?

A bond promises two things: a coupon payment on a set schedule, and its face value back at maturity. A bond's price today is simply those future payments discounted back to the present at the market's required yield.
When the market yield is higher than the bond's own coupon rate, the bond is worth less than its face value — it trades at a discount. When the yield is lower than the coupon rate, it's worth more — a premium. When they match, it trades exactly at par.
